In a significant diplomatic turn of events, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio traveled to Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis this week to attend the 50th Regular Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government, the first time in a decade that a sitting U.S. Secretary of State joined a CARICOM Heads of Government meeting.
Rubio flew overnight from Washington following the State of the Union address, to attend the summit, a move widely seen as a strong signal of the Trump administration's renewed interest in the region. Standing before Caribbean leaders, Rubio delivered a pointed message: Washington is returning its focus to the Caribbean and means business.
His speech touched on U.S. policy toward Venezuela, counternarcotics, and energy development, asking leaders of the bloc for cooperation. Rubio also reaffirmed Washington's commitment to cooperation with Caribbean nations, particularly on security and economic resilience.
